The 2700K Rule: Why Your Home Should Never Be Brighter Than a Candle-lit Table

Walk into any truly expensive room — a Aman lobby, a Milanese apartment, a members' club in Mayfair — and measure the light. It will almost never exceed 2700 kelvin. Warmth is not an accident of taste; it is a discipline.

The mistake most homes make is treating light as a utility. The ceiling receives a grid of 6500K downlights, the room is 'bright', and every material in it — the oak, the linen, the skin of the people you love — is rendered in the palette of a parking garage.

Our studio works with three layers. Ambient light sets the floor of the scene and should be dim enough to feel like evening. Task light is surgical and local: the reading chair, the chopping board, the vanity. Accent light is the storyteller — a picture light grazing a canvas, a cove washing a lime-plastered wall.

The rule of thumb we give every client: buy the dimmer before you buy the fixture. A ₹400 dimmer improves a chandelier more than another ₹40,000 of chandelier does.
